This post is a The Art of Seduction summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Part 1, Chapter 4: The Dandy.

The Art of Seduction was written by Robert Greene. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.

There are two things needed for a successful seduction: confusion and excitement.

The Dandy brings both of these things by playing with masculinity and femininity.

They create themselves how they wish, unlike the rest of us who conform to society, and by embodying psychological traits traditionally associated with the opposite sex, they tap into our inherent narcissism.

These things combined make the Dandy very attractive to the rest of us.

Contents

The Feminine Dandy

The feminine dandy may play with his physicality and costume like a woman, but he is still masculine.

It is a role reversal. He attracts a woman the same way she would attract a man - slowly and attentively. Then, when the time comes to strike, the boldness of man erupts and his target is overwhelmed.

Many women are naturally drawn to the allure of femininity. By reflecting that same charm back to her, her defenses are lowered and she will become vulnerable to the bold (masculine) move.

Ambiguity is the key. There is no question that you are heterosexual, but your image and demeanor float between the two.

The Masculine Dandy

The Masculine Dandy reverses the role of male dominance in seduction. She robs the man of all his power.

You are still passionate and sexual, but not dependent on him as many other women are. For all he knows, you could easily leave him for the next man, and are often too busy for him with work, social activities, etc.

Style

Unlike the rest of us, who merely think we do as we please, the Dandy truly lives as they please. To be a Dandy, you must truly stand out from the majority, in both appearance and behavior.

Clothing is a great tool for the Dandy. No need to follow the current trends. Create your own style, expressing yourself with superior confidence.

But you are not grasping for attention. You must be subtle.

Attitude

Your attitude towards life must also be non-conformist. Never try to please others. You do what you want, creating a life of pleasure for yourself. Everything is an aesthetic choice — you make life an art. You are not concerned with how others think of you, even if that manifests as rude and disrespectful behavior.

Where the Rake focuses his energy on the woman, the Dandy focuses his or her energy on society itself. The Dandy seduces the social circle, not just the target.

Dangers

The idea of masculine and feminine roles is historically a touchy subject. Since the Dandy plays these roles, it can cause confusion in the minds of those of the same sex, confusion they may not like. This is your primary threat.

Do not try to fight the image you have created. A big part of your charm as a Dandy is that you don’t care what others think of you.

Another issue the Dandy faces is that disrespectful behavior towards the truly powerful can backfire. This is why the angle of the Dandy works best for those that can get away with it, such as artists (Andy Warhol was a classic Dandy).

In the modern world, you can still have the appeal of the Dandy without overly offending people. Just tone it down a bit. Be pleasantly different instead of unearthing others’ insecurities.
