The moment people think they can predict what you will do is the moment you will lose them.

You must create suspense by keeping them guessing. Harness the power of mystery and give them the thrill of being surprised.

The best surprises are those that reveal to your target something new about your character. To do this takes some calculated preparation. 

People always assume a first impression from your public persona. In the beginning, play that up. Then, surprise them with out-of-character actions. For example, perhaps you seem shy, but then you suddenly surprise them by singing karaoke in front of everyone. 

Then, once they’re off-balance, surprise them again. 

These well-designed surprises in your character will draw them further and further into your world.

Surprises usually work best when they seem spontaneous. This doesn’t mean they can’t be planned, but you must deliver them as if you just got the idea. For example, take your target somewhere new as though you just thought of it. 

When things are presented suddenly, your target won’t have the time to figure out that it was carefully planned.

Things that seem natural are naturally seductive.

On the flip side, thoughtful surprises also have their place. You must plan and calculate. If everything is improvised, you’re just being lazy, and it will show.

People like the feeling that you have put some effort into making them feel good. This doesn’t mean you should make a big deal of it. Instead, show it through actions. Get them thoughtful gifts and plan deliberately with them in mind.

If you use the same surprise too much, it will become predictable, e.g., “surprising” your target with flowers every week. Make sure your surprises are genuinely unexpected. Mix it up.
