This post is a The Art of Seduction summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Part 2, Chapter 4: Appear to Be an Object of Desire — Create Triangles.
The Art of Seduction was written by Robert Greene. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.
People want people others want!
That’s because desire has a lot to do with vanity.
It’s the basic marketing concept of social proof applied to seduction. The more people find you attractive, the more desirable you become to others.
The opposite is also true. If you come off as unattractive to others, then that catches on too.
The best way to show your target that others desire you is to introduce one, two, three or more people into the mix.
Subtly make your target aware of how much others desire you.
Surround yourself with those who admire you (both friends and lovers). Subtly expose your past conquests.
Humans naturally want what others have. We like to imitate and compete, so make your target compete for you.
Don’t worry about coming off as a serial seducer. This, more often than not, will create desire. It’s a matter of pride to be seduced by known seducers.
Another way to enhance your desirability is through contrast. Subtly highlight differences between you and those who are dull and unattractive. Expose your target to them, and in comparison you will be a sight for sore eyes.
The best way to do this is to display attractive qualities (humor, confidence, etc.) that others in the social group or your competitors do not have.
Rare objects are considered more valuable — a principle known as scarcity marketing.
Present yourself as out of their reach and it will increase their desire for you.
Be the trophy.
