This post is a The Art of Seduction summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Part 2, Chapter 24: Beware the Aftereffects.
The Art of Seduction was written by Robert Greene. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.
All seductions come to an end.
What was once endearment can turn to distrust and disappointment, or perhaps an unwillingness to let go.
You must handle things with purpose, depending on how you want things to go.
Once your seduction is complete and tension is released, your target may turn.
This is a natural occurrence. It’s as if the spell is wearing off and your target can see the real you and all your human flaws.
If you wish to keep things exciting, you need to start a second seduction.
On the flip side, you may be the one to lose interest. This can be tricky as your target’s emotions can be unpredictable. Long goodbyes are not a good idea. End it quickly, and if needed, use anti-seduction techniques to break the spell.
Also be aware that the attempt to end things can sometimes revive your target’s attraction to you.
There are many undesired aftereffects that can occur once the seduction is over. Here are some tactics you can use to avoid those aftereffects.
Fight against inertia: Don’t let things settle into routine. Continued effort is required to keep your target interested.
Maintain mystery: Reality is not seductive. You can let some familiarity creep in because too much mystery creates doubt, but every now and then surprise your target. Don’t let them think they know your every move.
Maintain lightness: Fight the urge to whine and complain about behavior you don’t like. Keep things light. Seduction is a game.
Avoid the slow burnout: If you feel things are over, end it quickly.
When you need to end things but the quick and direct approach won’t work for whatever reason, use anti-seduction techniques to dissolve the spell.
Overwhelm your target with attention and release all tension. Act insecure and hopelessly in love.
One way to end a seduction is to be called away. Have some duty to attend to in another place.
Create a memorable experience and then move on. Perhaps you will be back one day.
After breaking things off, you may wish to re-seduce the same target again. In this case, the seduction must be bold and quick.
You will not be able to re-seduce everyone, and it is easier to re-seduce those who don’t know you so well and have pleasant memories of you.
The passage of time is also good for re-seduction. Your target will forget your faults.
