This post is a The Art of Seduction summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Part 2, Chapter 21: Give Them Space to Fall—The Pursuer is Pursued.

The Art of Seduction was written by Robert Greene. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.

If you are always the one doing the chasing, your target will become complacent.

Don’t let this happen. Back off a bit and let them be the aggressor. Appear disinterested—perhaps you’re getting bored or there is someone else in your sights.

But remember, do this subtly. Do just enough to plant the seed and let their imagination take care of the rest.

Step Back

As a general rule, don’t crowd your target. Don’t be completely absent, but keep some mystery about you.

In the beginning, you must be the aggressor to show interest, but if you are always the aggressor, no tension will be built.

Once you have created desire, retreat a little so your target must pursue you.

Not a Wound

In the previous chapter (Mix Pleasure with Pain) you create a pattern of pain and pleasure in order to make your target dependent on you.

In this strategy, the aim is to make them the aggressor.

You can't combine the two strategies.

Timing

If you are absent at the wrong time, your target may lose interest in you or find another, so only use this tactic when you are positive that your target is attracted to you, and never let it drag on.

Passive Targets

Some people will never turn into the aggressor. They are passive by nature, and if you don’t make the bold move, nothing will happen.
