This post is a The Art of Seduction summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Part 2, Chapter 2: Create a False Sense of Security — Approach Indirectly.
The Art of Seduction was written by Robert Greene. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.
Coming on too strong may generate resistance from your target—resistance that may be impossible to overcome.
To combat this, your initial approach must not be as a seducer.
Instead, move from friend to lover.
No one likes to be manipulated or to think they’re being manipulated. Therefore, if you can get your target to think they are the one seducing you, your job will be much easier.
The way to do this is to get their attention and stir up desire within them.
Don’t come on too strong. Give them space and get them to come to you either by showing up in their periphery or actively befriending them.
You can also play the tease. Show interest, then take a step back.
Fight the urge to crowd and smother them, especially if your attraction to them is strong.
Most of us, regardless of gender, are on guard when it comes to the initial seduction. If you bring up feelings of fear or anxiety, it can scare your target off before you get a chance to begin.
Come across as harmless in the beginning. Have everyday conversations. Be deliberately dull so your target will tune out your words and begin to fantasize about you.
Approaching your target via someone they already know is very powerful. If you are in their social circle, you forgo being a stranger.
Being bold is great for short seductions. Make an immediate impression and stir desire from the first time you meet your target.
Being indirect, however, makes for more meaningful relationships. The quantity of your seductions will be fewer, but the quality will be greater, and therefore more enjoyable in the long run.
