This post is a The Art of Seduction summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Part 2, Chapter 17: Effect a Regression.

The Art of Seduction was written by Robert Greene. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.

People will always try to recapture pleasure from the past, usually something from childhood, often associated with a parental figure.

Bring your targets back to that state and position them as the needy child, and they will fall for you.

Transference

Although most will not admit it, the feeling of dependency on parents as a child can carry sexual undertones, according to Freudian theory.

If you can make someone feel protected by you, they will conjure up all sorts of fantasies.

One way to do this is via transference, which is when a patient unconsciously redirects feelings or desires from important people in their past (like parents) onto their therapist—a concept coined by Freud.

To initiate transference in your target, you must play the role of the therapist and encourage others to talk about their childhood. Be attentive but quiet, caring yet distant, and make occasional, nonjudgmental comments.

Collect Information

When your target starts to regress (which often occurs during discussions of their childhood) they may reveal valuable information which you must remember. Not through their words (things will often be sugar-coated or exaggerated) but by their tone and mannerisms. Look for things that make them emotional or that they avoid.

You must learn to analyze emotional responses. Look for recurring themes and never take words at face value.

Once you discover who has affected them deeply and how, you can mimic the role.

Finish the Unfinished

Everyone has disappointments and painful memories from childhood. Discover what they are and fulfill what your target lacked.

The Four Regressions

Don’t just talk about memories. You want your target to act out issues from their past. You do this by effecting one of the four regressions:

Infantile: This is the most powerful regression which works on most people. It mimics the bond between mother and infant child. Instill this with unconditional love. It need not be tailored to the target.

Oedipal: This refers to the Oedipal triangle of mother, father, and child. To enact this, play the parental role. Be loving while also instilling discipline when needed. Treat your target as a child. This regression must be tailored to your target, so do not go forward until you have learned what is needed about their childhood. Also, be sure to include the erotic component in your parental behavior.

Ego Ideal: As children, we often form ideals of who we want to be as well as who potential partners should be. To enact this, you want to reproduce the feelings of infatuation, like that of a younger sibling for an older one.

Reverse Parental: In this role, you are the one that regresses. Play the role of the adorable yet sexually charged youth. Emphasize your weakness and vulnerabilities and your target will want to protect and parent you. Don’t ask for favors, but let them spoil you.

The Rebellious

When playing a parental role, the danger is that the ‘child’ will become wary of dependence and rebel. Be ready for this and never take it personally.
