This post is a The Art of Seduction summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Part 2, Chapter 18: Stir Up the Transgressive and Taboo.
The Art of Seduction was written by Robert Greene. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.
People are always tempted by the dark side.
Demonstrate to your target that you can lead them past social norms, that you have no fear of the normal restrictions such as age differences and monogamy, and their desire for you will grow.
The shared guilt of indulging in the taboo will bond you together.
However, if you go down this route, don’t go in half-assed or it will lose its effectiveness.
Social limits run deep in our society. These limits determine what is and isn’t socially acceptable. They may change over time, but they are always there.
However, there is something about being told we can’t do something that makes us want to do it. We all want to go beyond the limits, but most are scared to do it.
Be your target’s guide. Give them the sense that you can take them beyond the socially acceptable.
We always want what we can’t have, so be the thing that others can not, or should not have.
Be the one they’re told to avoid. Have a dark streak. This is the classic “bad boy” play.
Lure your target in by being forbidden, then entice them to be more like you.
In the latter stages of your seduction, mix your tenderness with a little cruelty. This will keep your target on their toes and they will fight to get your tenderness back.
Be careful not to be cold for too long or too often.
Breaking limits and exploring the taboo doesn’t always have to be dark. You can be good on the extreme side also, e.g., Gandhi.
The idea is to go beyond acceptable behavior.
