This post is a The Art of Seduction summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Part 2, Chapter 13: Disarm Through Strategic Weakness and Vulnerability.

The Art of Seduction was written by Robert Greene. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.

Being too aggressive with your seductive tactics may raise suspicion.

To combat this, feign weakness and vulnerability so your target feels superior. Let them feel in control.

Contents

Playing the Victim

One way to let your target feel superior is through physical signs of weakness. Being shy or bashful, shedding tears, etc.

Tears, especially, have a powerful effect on others. They command sympathy and people will do things they wouldn’t normally do in order to comfort those who are sad. However, tears will lose their effect if used too often, so save them for when truly needed.

If your tears just seem to annoy your target, you should probably move on to someone else.

Deeply Affected

Another way to empower your target is to reveal how much they’ve affected you emotionally.

Confess

One honest gesture can cover up many future deceits. Confess something bad you did—or considered doing—to them.

Creating this second crystallization is critical.

If you are easy to have, your worth goes down.

Be Vulnerable

Most people hide their shortcomings, but this comes off as inauthentic and can be easily sensed.

The natural traits about your character are what others find seductive, so don’t hide your vulnerabilities.

You don’t want to seem pathetic, but it’s good to let your target see the soft side of you once they’ve gotten to know you better.

Be strong and in control most of the time, but show your vulnerable side from time to time to those ‘special’ ones.

Male and Female

For the male, it is important to show your softer side while still remaining masculine. You still need to take charge and lead the seduction. That’s just the way it is.

On the flip side, a woman seducing a man should not come on too strong. You do not want to threaten his masculinity. You need to be both in need of protection and sexual.

Timing

Displaying your vulnerabilities to someone who is not falling for you may find you pathetic. Save this play for when you see signs that your target is becoming enamored with you.

Unseductive Weaknesses

Certain weaknesses are always off-putting. Never complain, whine, or appear needy.

Also, actively seeking sympathy will not be taken well.

Only show the kinds of weakness that make you more lovable.
