This post is a Cold Reading summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Chapter 26: More Common Experiences.

Cold Reading was written by George Hutton. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.

By now you should be well-versed with the fact that although we all think we’re very unique individuals, the truth is that we all experience similar things in more or less the same way.

In other words, the majority of us think, feel, and react similarly under similar circumstances.

Knowing this fundamental truth means that as a cold reader, you can practice cold reading for

specific situations knowing that these situations are likely to arise.

Contents

Unrequited Crush

Use this when you see someone glancing around a crowd and showing signs of loneliness.

I sense something profound in your past. There was someone you really liked but never revealed your feelings to, perhaps due to misunderstandings. Recently, something reminded you of that unreciprocated affection, stirring up anxiety. However, I can see you have a lot of love to give, and you wisely choose to keep it reserved for the right person. While part of you wants to express that affection, a deeper, instinctual part understands the importance of waiting for the one who truly appreciates it.

Getting Left Behind

Use this when you see someone alone in a social crowd and doesn’t seem comfortable being alone.

I sense something in you as you observe those around you. Part of you feels happy and excited, proud of being a great friend. Yet, a deeper part carries worries from your past—perhaps a terrifying experience of loneliness and abandonment. There's a lingering fear of that happening again. However, a more profound, ancient part of you understands our fundamental connection to each other. Embracing this part of yourself allows you to shine your light in a way that ensures you will never feel abandoned.

Unsure of What We Are Doing

None of us are really 100% sure of what we are doing. Use this when somebody seems frustrated and could use some cheering up.

I sense a powerful explorer in you, eager to learn and meet new people. However, there's also a worry about getting in over your head, especially with others depending on you. This concern drives you to push forward, but you sometimes forget that those who rely on you can also support you in return. If you ever feel overwhelmed, know that people are ready to help you navigate challenges. This ability to shift from being a leader to seeking advice is a unique quality and reflects the essence of a strong leader.

Obstacles

Obstacles in life are a common experience. We have all had something get in the way of us getting what we want, and it happens all the time.

Most of the time we overcome obstacles. Sometimes they are big obstacles and we are proud of our achievements, and other times they are small - perhaps we don’t even see them as obstacles.

Being Proud

We all have accomplishments we are proud of. Use this whenever you see someone in a good mood.

You've accomplished so much, and it shows. You possess a quiet yet powerful appreciation for yourself and your achievements. It's as if you reflect on your past, envision your future successes, and feel good about them. This sense of confidence seems almost subconscious, allowing you to rely on your abilities effortlessly. Such deep confidence is indeed rare.

Relationship Doubts

We all question our closest relationships sometimes. Use this when you know someone might be having relationship problems.

I sense some inner turmoil within you, but it's unique in that you don't suppress it like many do. You're brave enough to confront it directly, critically evaluating the most important aspects of your life to ensure they are healthy and strong. This ability, paradoxically, is what makes them resilient. Many avoid acknowledging such deep conflicts out of fear, but you have the confidence to face them. This willingness to address your inner struggles sets you apart from others who choose to keep theirs hidden.

The Future

We all worry about the future. Use this when you see someone that seems worried or anxious for any reason.

There’s something about you that resembles worry, but it's more like a quiet sense of anticipation. You sense that something is coming, and you're preparing for anything. While most might see this as fear or anxiety, that would be a misunderstanding. By recognizing this anticipation as a healthy way to navigate the unknown, you gain emotional flexibility to handle whatever arises. Ignoring it as mere anxiety, as many do, would stifle your emotional and intellectual creativity and could even manifest the very thing you fear.

Validation

We all want validation for our efforts. Use this when you want to cheer someone up.

Some may interpret what's within you as sadness, but you know it's not that. While others feel left out or unrecognized, seeking constant validation, you understand that true validation comes from within, as you alone know the depth of your accomplishments. I sense something significant is on the horizon. Though you may not know when or how, this inner resilience—unfazed by the need for constant recognition—will eventually lead to something magnificent that everyone will notice. Part of you understands this, which is why you're comfortable going it alone for now.
