This post is a Cold Reading summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Chapter 10: Meta Journaling.
Cold Reading was written by George Hutton. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.
Throughout the day we are all thinking thoughts, common thoughts about common choices.
What to watch, what to eat, who to date, etc.
Most people think these thoughts and choices are unique to their individual personality.
But the truth is, given the same circumstances, the thought process of how to choose is very similar. And often, the choices you make would be the exact same choice as a random person in the street.
Most people never consider this, which is why when, as a cold reader, you echo back someone's thoughts, which are actually your thoughts, it seems like you see something about them that no one else does.
What I just described are thoughts about things. What to do, eat, watch, etc. We also all have thoughts about thoughts, and these are just as predictable as thoughts about things.
If you can tell someone how they feel about something (thoughts about things) and then follow up by describing how they feel about what they feel (thoughts about thoughts), it will seem almost mystical to them.
As always, you are going to need to do some journaling to attune yourself with common second level emotions (thoughts about thoughts).
Start with any thought you had about a thing. Now describe how you feel about that thought.
When doing this, stay as objective as you can. Be an observer of your thoughts. Go over your thought processes over and over again until they become so familiar that you could describe them naturally to someone else, i.e., as you cold read them.
Although we all mostly have the same thoughts and feelings about things and thoughts, the order in which we feel those things can differ. For example, when something happens you might feel anxious, then frustrated, then angry. Someone else might feel angry first, then anxious, and then frustrated.
This is also true for positive emotions.
The only emotion theyโll be aware of is the last emotion they feel. So when you cold read someone, try to pinpoint that last emotion.
