This post is a The Storyteller’s Secret summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Part 2, Chapter 12: What You Don’t Understand Can (and Does) Hurt You.
The Storyteller’s Secret was written by Carmine Gallo. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.
An analogy is simply a comparison showing how two things are alike.
It makes abstract ideas easier to grasp by connecting them to something familiar. When people can’t relate to an idea, they struggle to remember it—and they’re unlikely to act on it.
Analogies are the foundation of effective storytelling, especially when explaining complex subjects. They work by linking the unknown to the known, giving people an anchor point for understanding. In education, this bridge is essential. Without clarity, confusion sets in—and confusion makes learning nearly impossible.
Nothing captures attention like a personal story. Sharing your own experiences—especially something unexpected or unique—grabs people in a way that data alone cannot. Stories help listeners see the real-world impact of concepts and choices.
Narratives in the form of storytelling, testimonials, and even entertainment have been shown to influence behavior, including in health-related settings. That’s because people remember stories, not statistics.
Data has its place, but stories win hearts. When unscientific stories spread, the most effective response isn’t just more numbers—it’s a strong, evidence-based counternarrative. Stories resonate where data alone may fall flat, especially with non-specialists who want to see the consequences of action (or inaction).
When you’re trying to explain something new, replace jargon and abstractions with analogies and stories. This makes information more relatable, memorable, and actionable.
