An analogy is simply a comparison showing how two things are alike.

Analogies are the foundation of effective storytelling, especially when explaining complex subjects. They work by linking the unknown to the known, giving people an anchor point for understanding. In education, this bridge is essential. Without clarity, confusion sets in—and confusion makes learning nearly impossible.

Nothing captures attention like a personal story. Sharing your own experiences—especially something unexpected or unique—grabs people in a way that data alone cannot. Stories help listeners see the real-world impact of concepts and choices.

Narratives in the form of storytelling, testimonials, and even entertainment have been shown to influence behavior, including in health-related settings. That’s because people remember stories, not statistics.

Data has its place, but stories win hearts. When unscientific stories spread, the most effective response isn’t just more numbers—it’s a strong, evidence-based counternarrative. Stories resonate where data alone may fall flat, especially with non-specialists who want to see the consequences of action (or inaction).
