Open with something your audience can relate to.

If you start too esoteric or abstract, you risk losing them before you’ve begun. Talking about family, for example, works because almost everyone has family members they can relate to in some way.

Aristotle’s Three Keys of Persuasion

Aristotle outlined three essential elements of persuasion that still hold true today:

  • Pathos (emotion) – Use stories that resonate.

  • Logos (logic) – Support with reasoning and analysis.

  • Ethos (credibility) – Build trust through evidence and authority.

When used together, these three elements form the foundation of effective communication.

We naturally understand life as stories—ongoing narratives with characters, conflict, and resolution. Stories invite people to engage emotionally and see themselves in the message. That’s something raw data and analysis can never do on their own.
