This post is a The Art of Seduction summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Part 2, Chapter 6: Master the Art of Insinuation.
The Art of Seduction was written by Robert Greene. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.
To insinuate is to subtly plant ideas in people’s minds.
It is the best way to influence people as it allows you to bypass their natural resistance.
To plant a seductive idea you need to have your target imagine their fantasies come true.
Do this by suggesting possibilities like health, pleasure, wealth, or adventure.
The best time to use insinuations is when your target is very relaxed or distracted.
Disguise them as slips of the tongue — things you quickly apologize for — or as enticing references in passing conversation.
Words are not the only thing you can use to insinuate. Gestures and looks also have immense power.
In fact, silence on a subject can often insinuate more powerfully than words. Let others infer what you want through your manners and actions.
Leaving things too ambiguous can lead your target to misunderstand your intentions.
You must know when to insinuate and when to be more direct in your seduction. If you know your target will be pleased, then communicating your intentions and ideas clearly is often the best choice.
However, if you are ever in doubt, the indirect method of insinuation is often the better move.
