This post is a The Art of Seduction summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Part 1, Chapter 8: The Charismatic.

The Art of Seduction was written by Robert Greene. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.

Charisma shines from the inside out.

It oozes some of the most attractive qualities—confidence, sexual energy, purpose, and contentment. These things combined allow the Charismatic to seduce not only the individual, but the general public also—en masse.

People love to be led by those they believe can deliver good or exciting times, which is why charismatics are often seen as natural leaders.

Learning Charisma

You may think that charisma is one of those things that people are born with, but that is far from the truth.

Although some traits are certainly innate, many can be learned or developed, and that can be enough to pull off the illusion.

Purpose: People will instinctively follow those they believe have a solid vision and a plan to get there. Pick something to believe in (cause, ideal, vision, etc.) and demonstrate that you will not stray from achieving it.

Mystery: The Charismatic is a mysterious and contradictory individual. It doesn’t matter how you display the contradiction in your personality (cruel but kind, intimate yet distant, etc.), but it is important to reveal it subtly.

Saintliness: Most people put survival first. The Charismatic does not. They are unwilling to compromise for what they believe in. The key is that you must actually have these deeply held values, and then show (subtly) that you live by your beliefs.

Eloquence: Words are the fastest way to tap into emotions, which is why the Charismatic is a master of them. Speak with emotion and the audience will feel the same. Use catchphrases and rhythmic repetitions so the audience has something to echo.

Theatricality: Charismatic individuals are ‘larger than life’. But that doesn’t mean you are loud and flamboyant. Being calm and oozing self-confidence work better. If you try too hard, it will work against you as people will sense it.

Uninhibitedness: Expressing your sexuality more than others, not fearing death, and being spontaneous are the qualities of the uninhibited (and charismatic) soul.

Fervency: You must have a true belief in something, a great cause. Something that makes your eyes light up. It’s a fire within you.

Vulnerability: Show your softer side. Reveal your love for your followers, and display the need to feel that love returned. However, to avoid seeming manipulative, imagine the public as a single person you wish to seduce. People love to be desired.

Adventurous: To be Charismatic you must be unconventional and brave. Be willing to ‘face the fire’ for the greater good of your followers. Failure to do so will make you look cowardly and timid, and all will be lost.

Magnetism: Indirect communication is a must, and this is largely done with the eyes. Your gaze must show that you have nerves of steel. Practice this, because if your eyes don’t match your character, you will be revealed as a fake.

Confidence

Confidence is of utmost importance for attracting followers. Even the most outlandish ideas will be followed by at least some people if you convey your message with enough authority and focus.

Describe the future and all the things you will accomplish as if it’s written in stone. Be detailed and authoritative.

Be Genuine

People are drawn to those that are comfortable with themselves. Those who do not try to hide their flaws. Rid yourself of self-consciousness. You don’t need to be physically attractive or display a loud personality. Just be yourself and don’t apologize for your dark side. Remember, it is all for your greater mission or vision.

The Guru Effect

It may take a lot of work and discipline to get where you are, but don’t let the people know. It's better if they think you are like this naturally. That way, perhaps if they are close to you, some of your charisma will rub off on them.

You must seem like you are enlightened. Chosen from above. You understand things most others don’t, and this understanding makes you content. Let this contentment silently radiate from you.

Dangers

Charisma stirs up emotion, and that can be dangerous. Stirring up love is amazing, but it is hard to sustain. If your followers get ‘erotic fatigue’ and reality starts to kick in, the love will turn to resentment and eventually hate.

To avoid this, you must master your charisma and keep it under control. Once you gain success, you must keep it. The fire in your belly will get you there, but to remain in control you must be practical and cautious.

Finally, beware of succeeding a failed Charismatic in a leadership role. You will be left cleaning up the mess. Instead of continuing what the former started, go in a new direction.
