This post is a The Art of Seduction summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Part 1, Chapter 6: The Coquette.

The Art of Seduction was written by Robert Greene. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.

Coquettes are the masters of delayed gratification.

They are self-sufficient. They don’t need you. They hold all the cards and attract you with a classic hot-and-cold strategy.

They will entice you with rewards of pleasure, happiness, and power, but it will always be just out of your grasp.

They know how to please, but not how to love.

Hot-and-Cold

One of the most powerful keys of seduction is the ability to walk away — to make others chase you.

Make your targets think you are losing interest, and it will amplify their desire.

Then, when they feel almost all is lost, show interest again. But be sure not to do this too soon.

Create Space

The classic saying “absence makes the heart grow fonder” rings true. Seduction needs space. Create it by being elusive. Play hard to get. This will draw your targets in.

The Tease

Coquettes these days may be labelled as a tease, and rightly so. They are experts at it.

To be a coquette, you must spark desire through a provocative appearance or captivating demeanor. This is how you draw others in at first—then, you hold them with emotional withdrawal.

Confidence

Self-sufficiency and confidence are very attractive traits. In fact, low self-esteem is the ultimate repellent.

The less needy you are, the more others will be drawn to you.

This is not self-absorption. Talking endlessly about yourself displays your insecurities.

Mixed Signals

Sending mixed signals is one of the tools of the Coquette. Attract your target with that which they desire (sex, fame, power, etc.) and then send contrary signals to confuse them.

Flirt in a non-obvious way. Be ambiguous. You want to stimulate and frustrate your victim at the same time.

Never Jealous

The Coquette uses a range of emotions to attract: tears, anger, guilt, sadness, etc. can all be very seductive.

But the Coquette should never be jealous, as it goes directly against your image of self-sufficiency.

However, that doesn’t mean you don’t play with jealousy. Make others jealous by paying attention to someone else. Have them compete for you.

Groups

The Coquette archetype is very effective when used on groups. It will stimulate love, jealousy and devotion. As the Coquette attracting a group, you must keep your distance, both emotionally and physically. You must be detached from any individual so you can play hot-and-cold at will.

Dangers

The obvious danger to the Coquette is that they play with people’s emotions. In order to avoid the backlash, you must pay close attention. Don’t play either hot or cold for too long. For example, anger must be quickly followed by a smile.

When things go too far, if you are too cold for too long, it can lead to resentment or hostility. Be careful not to play the emotions of people too hard — especially if they are emotionally vulnerable. Everyone has a breaking point. Do not cross it or you may feel their wrath.
