This post is a She Comes First summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Part 1, Chapter 8: What’s in a Name? and Chapter 9: Now You See it: Female Sexual Anatomy Part 1.

She Comes First was written by Ian Kerner. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.

“Vagina” tends to be the catch-all term for everything “down there,” but it’s worth getting to know the correct names for each part.

Here’s a friendly rundown of what’s actually down there:

Contents

Mons Pubis

The mons pubis is the soft, fatty mound above the pubic bone, typically covered in pubic hair. It acts as a protective cushion and is the first part you’ll notice above the rest.

Labia Majora (Outer Lips)

Just below the mons pubis begin the labia majora, or outer lips. These folds of skin are usually also covered in pubic hair and help protect the more sensitive inner parts. They’re touch-sensitive, but not as much as other areas.

Front Commissure

Located just above the clitoral head, the front commissure is a small, highly sensitive area where the outer lips meet at the top.

Labia Minora (Inner Lips)

Tucked inside the outer lips are the labia minora, or inner lips. These vary greatly in appearance from person to person and are extremely sensitive. They typically darken and swell during arousal.

Clitoral Hood (The Hood)

Formed by the joining of the inner lips, the clitoral hood covers the clitoral head, protecting it from overstimulation—similar to the male foreskin. It’s also a source of pleasure when it gently rubs against the clitoris.

Frenulum (Bridle)

The frenulum is a small, ultra-sensitive strip of skin just below the clitoral head, formed where the inner lips come together. Think of it as the underside of the clitoris.

Fourchette (“Little Fork”)

The fourchette is where the bottom edges of the inner lips meet, just below the vaginal opening. It marks the lower edge of the visible clitoral structure and is another tender, responsive area.

Clitoral Glans (The Head)

Often called the clitoral head or even the “love button,” this is the most visible part of the clitoris and packs in around 8,000 nerve endings.

While it’s small, it’s incredibly powerful. Don’t underestimate its sensitivity. In fact, overstimulation is one of the most common mistakes during intimate play.

Regardless of size, all clitoral heads are equally sensitive—they all contain the same number of nerve endings.

Perineum

The perineum is the small stretch of skin between the vaginal entrance and the anus. During arousal, it fills with blood and becomes more sensitive, making it another potential pleasure point.
