This post is a Cold Reading summary. Specifically, it is a summary of Chapter 25: Post Hypnotic Suggestions.
Cold Reading was written by George Hutton. This chapter summary was written by Sam Fury.
Use post hypnotic suggestions to enhance the lingering effect of a cold-reading.
Of course, the hypnotic effect in this sense isn’t like you see on TV Instead of it being set up like a command (e.g., when I click my fingers you’ll think you’re a chicken), it is more like classical conditioning.
Take something that happens naturally and attach it to something that it wouldn’t normally be associated with.
One of the reasons we humans love (and use) stories so much is because they are full of post hypnotic suggestions.
For example, as a child you were told many stories (movies, books, fairy tales, etc.) where a hero, even though faced with massive odds, still wins. As you take in these stories, it inspires feelings of courage. When you go out into the real world as an adult, you often subconsciously evoke these feelings of courage. For example, when you go for an interview or ask someone on a date. Of course you are still nervous, but that’s what courage is - having fear and acting anyway.
When you plant post hypnotic suggestions into your cold reading, the goal is that any time in the future when your target encounters doubt or uncertainty, they’ll remember your prediction that they will someday do something great. This in turn gives them the motivation to keep going and anchors them to you at the same time.
Here is an example of how a post-hypnotic suggestion in a cold read might read:
Every time you feel unsure or uncertain about your future, you’ll remember this message and how I told you about your great and powerful future.
The longer and more detailed your cold reading, and the more vividly you describe their future.
Obstacles in life are a common experience. We have all had something get in the way of us getting what we want, and it happens all the time.
Most of the time we overcome obstacles. Sometimes they are big obstacles and we are proud of our achievements, and other times they are small - perhaps we don’t even see them as obstacles.
The problems arise with those obstacles that we feel are too big for us to overcome. For these, perhaps we want help, or maybe we want to give up.
Giving up or shifting blame (making excuses) is another universal human experience.
As a cold reader, use the overcoming of past obstacles as a primary cause to the effect of why your target will achieve what they want in the future.
To do this, you need to do three things:
1. Evoke the feeling of overcoming obstacles. Tell them that you see they are the kind of person that doesn’t give up easily.
2. Let them know that this trait (of not giving up) is somewhat unique to them. Highlight times when they have overcome obstacles whilst others have not.
3. Tell them that this trait of not giving up will cause their future success. Paint a clear causal path.
I can sense something very unique in you. Something very strong. A deep sense of resilience. I can tell you are somebody that doesn’t give up easily. Even when nobody is going to know but you, you keep pushing through, because you can’t stand to give in to your circumstances. That is very rare. Most people don’t have that quality. That resilience is going to help you to achieve …
